LEARN TO TEACH MODERN JIVE

Do you want to become a jive teacher with a nationally recognised qualification?

Would you like to train with a professional instructor who has a 100% pass rate for her students?

Are you prepared to put in time and effort to develop a level of skill and knowledge that will equip you to teach confidently and consistently?

Training courses leading to the LeRoc teaching examination (ratified by the UKA - United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Dance Teachers) are now available. Dates, venues and times are by arrangement - either over a number of weekends or weekday courses.

The cost is £500 per course per person and will cover an agreed number of sessions and will include

  • Developing your own dancing technique for demonstrating moves

  • Teaching a move, a lesson, a class, a workshop

  • How to build routines

  • How to develop the dancing of your students

  • Microphone technique

  • Choosing and using music

  • Running/managing a venue

The course not only includes the LeRoc teaching exam syllabus - both practical and theory, but also equips you to run  your own venue if you wish. Just Jivin' has been running successful jive venues for over 10 years and we can help you by showing you what works!

All students are required to register as student members with The LeRoc Federation, which is the professional association for independent modern jive teachers. (See www.leroc.org and "The Federation" page for more information). The LeRoc exam fee and membership is a separate cost.

Extra value!

If you are within travelling distance of a Just Jivin' venue (see Classes), then we may be able to provide extra development opportunities and practise for you through:-

  • demonstrating

  • teaching beginners run-through lessons

  • teaching main class lessons

If you are going to teach within an existing dance organisation who can help you with practise, then it may be possible to arrange for observation and feedback.

If you are on your own, we will endeavour to link you with a LeRoc member for practise (providing you are not about to set up in competition with them!).

To pass the LeRoc exam requires practical experience.

Frequently asked questions.

Q. How good a modern jive dancer do I need to be?

A. You will need a reasonable standard of modern jive dancing already. As teaching is about helping other people to learn to dance, a clear and simple style is required rather then necessarily being a top "performer". If you are from a different dance discipline you will need a longer course in order to become familiar with the dance style.

Q. What other skills do I need?

A. You need to be able to speak clearly and project your voice, although the training will help with that.  You also need to be interested in understanding the technical underpinning of the dance style.

Q. Do I need to bring a partner?

A. Not for the teaching course, the course is only for those who wish to teach. You will need to think about who will be demonstrating with you when you start teaching and how you will develop him/her to demonstrate the moves for others to copy. We run separate demonstrators workshop periodically as well.

Q. Will you take on everyone who wants to teach?

A. No! For applicants who want to teach for Just Jivin' there is an audition process (and a reduced fee for the course). Otherwise I usually hold a telephone interview - so both sides can understand what they will be taking on. Often I run a taster session, about 3 hours, so that potential students and I can see if we will suit. The fee for this is taken off the full course fee.

I also reserve the right to refuse potential students in my local area who would want to set up in competition with our own classes!
